It’s no secret that I love chalk paint. Its creamy, matte, velvety finish has had my heart from the first time I used it years ago. So when Annie Sloan Australia contacted me to become a stockist the timing couldn’t have been more perfect! I needed a replacement for Jolie, which is sadly closing up shop, and for Dixie Belle, which, although much loved has been increasingly difficult to import so we must let it go. **This is a good time to remind everyone that all Jolie paint and Dixie Belle Paint are heavily discounted. Stock up on bargains while they’re still here!
With 35 years in the industry joining the Annie Sloan team was an honour. And I was just in time to attend the Australian Annie Sloan retailers conference right here in Radelaide!
The conference was led by Annie Sloan brand ambassador and furniture/interior design artist extraordinaire Tristan Merriam.
We learned so much about Chalk Paint history as well as techniques with paint and wax, colour theory, embellishing AND had a personal chat with Annie Sloan herself!
Annie Sloan, together with Tristan Merriam, recently launched a podcast called The Colourist. Inspired by the first episode featuring Annie Sloan’s Capri Pink, I jumped straight in!
Although there are many ways to use chalk paint, Annie Sloan’s signature technique is to brush it on in multiple directions in a cross-hatch manner, creating texture. Using my Annie Sloan Large Chalk Paint Brush I dipped in and brushed away. Straight over the handles and hinges as well! Annie Sloan paint is thick and this makes it easy to create texture.
For a silky smooth chalk paint finish decant paint into a separate container and add water until the paint is the consistency of pouring cream. Then apply using a 5mm microfibre roller and sand lightly between coats.
While the first layer of Capri Pink was drying I painted the interior of the piece in Chateau Grey, a green-based-grey to complement the Capri Pink.
Once the two layers dried I applied three coats of Annie Sloan Gloss Lacquer to seal it using an O45 ClingOn paint brush. Applying high gloss finishes on bright colours highlights the details. It’s a look I just love. For extra drama I applied Annie Sloan’s Black Wax using a natural bristle brush.
