I love a good change up! And while Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint has been the foundation paint at For the Love from the beginning, much has changed in the last few years.
Founded in 2013 by blogger Marion Parsons, in a few short years she had 250 retailers across 3 continents. Not long after MMS Milk Paint launched, while looking for a non-toxic paint, For the Love Creations founder Sada Vee fell in love with MMSMP from first use. For the Love Creations is now Australia’s original and longest standing MMS retailer.
Nearly 9 years later Marion found herself wanting to pursue other creative outlets when Brenda and James Hess stepped in.
Brenda and James Hess moved production of MMSMP closer to their home in Utah and spent hours painstakingly researching, sourcing and trialling formulas to recreate and enhance the existing palette while making the milk paint easier to use.
Brenda was kind enough to clear some time in her busy schedule to have a chat with us:
What moved you to approach Marion?
I am all about natural, clean living in my home and the products we use. I wanted to take this paint that was mostly natural and make it all natural so I spent the best part of a year working with a company to create the new line, which was taking what we did and making it better and more natural.
What do we have to look forward to from MMSMP?
We will have 52 colours and even more natural products.
What has been the most challenging aspect of taking over MMS?
Buying a business in the middle of a pandemic then facing all of the supply chain issues. The pandemic also forced more than half of our retailers to close their doors.
What has been the most enjoyable part?
I love making a product that people get excited to use, and not just saying it’s safe but it actually being safe. I love knowing that I’m creating a natural product that I can stand behind that fits right in with my lifestyle.
Tell us why MMS is the best paint ever.
Because it’s exactly what we say it is. It is green, eco friendly, all natural, we don’t use any synthetic products. The paint itself is now plant based versus a mineral base. The pigments are plant based and with that you get durability and light-fastness, it will bio-degrade, you can compost it, it’s perfectly safe to rinse it down your drain. Nothing in it will hurt animals, children or people.
Be honest…what’s your favorite color?

MMS Milk Paint mimics a very old, natural formula of paint used thousands of years ago. If you’ve ever seen a 100 year old piece of furniture with its original paint, it’s very likely milk paint. Its five basic ingredients don’t contain binders and suspenders modern paints have, so it can be unpredictable. This is one of the things people love the most about it!
